Parga
The Location
Parga belongs to the Prefecture of Preveza and is located southwest of Epirus, near the river Acheron, the Prefecture of Thesprotia and opposite the picturesque islands of Paxos and Antipaxos.
The island of Panagia, the narrow stone-paved alleys that go up to the hill with the castle, the traditional “cantons”, the elegant two- and three-story houses with wooden balconies and tiled roofs in accordance with the local folk architecture, the mythical river Acheron and the A necromancer from the Age of Homer composes the idyllic landscape of Parga.
Parga is an exceptional traditional settlement built amphitheatrically of rare beauty. It is one of the most popular summer vacation spots due to its beautiful beaches.
Directly across from the city is the picturesque Island of Panagia where a church is built as well as medieval and Venetian buildings. It is a popular tourist destination of Epirus.
Parga itself can be considered an attraction, its beach is quite picturesque and it is worth walking through its cobbled streets. During the summer months, it is connected daily by ferry to Paxos and Antipaxos. It is also connected by boats to Ammoudia, Corfu and Lefkada.
One of the most picturesque and cosmopolitan spots in northwestern Greece, the beautiful Parga invites you to get to know its centuries-old history, its varied natural beauties and the hospitality of its inhabitants. It is built on the outskirts of the Venetian castle and is clearly influenced by Ionian architecture.
Sights
The castle of Parga, which can be reached through narrow streets and steps from the port of Parga, and there is also a paved road that leads to the beach of Valtos. Today the castle is illuminated and the public can visit it. In the central area, two central buildings have been reconstructed that host theatrical performances, exhibitions as well as crowds of people. In the Castle there is a refreshment bar-cafeteria, an exhibition space where a photography exhibition is housed. The castle can be visited from early morning until late at night.
The Castle of Anthousa: An imposing fortress that is built on a hill, between Anthousa and Agia and offers a panoramic view of the entire Parga region. The fortress was built by Ali Pasha to monitor and besiege Parga. The castle is preserved in good condition.
The Island of Panagia: Directly opposite the port of Parga is the green island of Panagia, which you can even go to by swimming. On the islet there is the church of Panagia and a small castle which was built by the French and dominates the highest point of the island.
The Necromanteion of Acheron: About 15 km from Parga is the most important ancient monument of the region. This is the most important necromancy of antiquity. Here the Ancient Greeks believed that the sources of the river Acheron were the Gates of the Underworld.
Beaches
Parga is also famous for its wonderful beaches. Most of the beaches are fully organized and have infrastructure for various water sports such as water skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, diving, etc.
The most famous and crowded beaches of Parga are:
Valtos Beach: It is the longest beach of Parga with a length of about 3 km. It is located in the west of Parga just below the impressive rock on which the castle of Parga is built. A beautiful pebble and sand beach that is organized and offers the visitor water sports.
Krioneri Beach: It is inside Parga and is just a few meters from the center and the pier of Parga. Opposite the beach and at a distance of a few meters is the picturesque island of Panagia, which can be reached by swimming. In the center opposite the beach dominates a small high rock island which the locals call Skorda.
Piso Kryonerio Beach: It is a small beach also within the settlement of Parga surrounded by high rocks.
Lichnos Beach: One of the famous beaches of Parga that offers a green landscape and clear blue, crystal waters. It is sandy, but also has gravel spots, has two small sea caves and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Parga. An organized beach that offers visitors water sports and is only 4 km from Parga.
Sarakiniko Beach: A beautiful beach located 12 km from Parga, after the village of Agia. There is a boat from the pier of Parga that can take you to Sarakiniko beach. A beautiful natural landscape that will reward the visitor.
